Getting accepted to a podiatry school was a weight taken off my shoulders, but then I found myself facing another problem. How do I prepare for what is coming my way?
You don’t, at least not in the way you might be imagining. Podiatry school will provide you with all the knowledge you need to become a competent podiatrist. Your challenge is to find a way to absorb and retain that information as it’s being taught.
The best advice I received from a fourth-year student was to focus on being an adult and take time to relax. He shared that one thing he wished he’d done differently was to establish an exercise and meal prep routine before podiatry school. Trying to balance those aspects of life while absorbing so much new information proved to be challenging.
So I did exactly that. I traveled, went to sporting events, experienced a solar eclipse, started a workout routine, and took a cooking class. Check out the photos below!
On the flip side, I was stressed. Once you’re accepted and pay your enrollment deposit, the to-do list for your program starts to grow quickly. You’ll receive invitations to open houses and accepted student days — I highly recommend attending at least one. You’ll also start getting requests for things like immunization records, along with emails containing your new login information
At the time, I was still juggling a lot: working full-time, completing my public health certificate, and finishing up my physics requirement. Balancing the demands of my future program with my current responsibilities felt overwhelming.
Since I paid my enrollment deposit in September, my program has reached out to me at least once a month. I truly can’t emphasize enough how much of a bright spot the staff and faculty have been during this stressful time. I even received a handwritten note and a gift from them — small gestures that made a big difference.
The more I reached out, the more supported and encouraged I felt. Their consistent communication helped me push through one of the most challenging transitions of my academic journey.
While I am still nervous about starting classes, I am also excited to dive deep into the world of podiatry.
